Native American and First Nations, College and Career Success 2nd Edition

The book is based on the premise that education for Native American and Indigenous students begins with a positive self-concept. For these students, positive self-concept includes pride in their cultural background. Chapters contain a section titled “Stories from the Elders” or “Interviews with the Elders,” which help students to connect universal themes in Native cultures to college success. Stories from Canada, the United States, and Mexico bridge commonalities across cultures. Talking circle topics help students to understand traditional culture and how they can build on this knowledge to improve their success in college, careers, and life.

Expanding the Circle

American Indian students are more likely to be successful as they transition from high school to postsecondary experiences when they have a clear understanding of their mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional selves. When young adults understand their "whole" selves and can set goals, organize, communicate, self-advocate, problem solve, and work in teams, they are better able to address the challenges of the future.

Expanding the Circle curriculum is designed from a culturally relevant perspective that recognizes students' cultural backgrounds, interests, and lived experiences, and promotes a successful transition from high school.
